To Clean Combs and Hairbrushes
Method 1: Use Baking Soda. Add a few spoonfuls of baking soda to a basin of hot water. If you only have a small comb, just use a cup. Soak the dirty end of your collection of hairbrushes and combs into the mixture and leave for 10 minutes. If you need to, use the ends of an old toothbrush to work out the gunk while they’re being soaked. Take out and rinse.
Method 2: Use plain old shampoo. Take an old toothbrush and add a dab of your shampoo on it. Use the toothbrush to scrub out the lint from your comb. If you have hairbrushes, soak them in the sink with some foamy shampoo water.
Method 3: Use vinegar. Soak the brushes and combs in a solution of vinegar and hot water for 10 minutes. The vinegar will strip the oil off the bristles.
Method 4: Use dishwashing liquid. You can use this the same way as Method 2 above.
Vinegar
Use plain vinegar or better yet, apple cider vinegar. Dilute 1 part vinegar to 1 part water if its too strong! Use your own good judgement because each vinegar product will differ in strength. Start off slow.
Dab on skin. Leave on for about 10 minutes. Wash off thoroughly with water.
Why it helps: The acid in vinegar sloughs off old skin cells like store-bought AHA products.
For longer-lasting nail color
Dab some astringent or facial toner over your nails before applying any nail polish. This will remove all traces of oil residue and help the nail polish adhere to your nail, and last longer.
Garlic for Strong, Hard Nails
Chop freshly peeled garlic and put this in your nail polish. Let this sit for a several days, afterwhich your old regular nail polish becomes a strengthening solution! (Some store-bought nail hardeners list garlic extract as an ingredient. e.g. Mavala Scientifique Nail Hardener and Oleda Hard Hard Nails.)
Turmeric – a traditional skin remedy to lighten skin
Mix turmeric powder (you can find this easily in most supermarkets. It is used mainly for Indian cooking so look for stores in areas that cater to this market.) with cucumber juice or lemon juice to make a paste. Apply to the affected area. Leave on for fifteen minutes. Rinse off. With daily use, skin pigmentation will even out.
