- Remove the wand from the tube of mascara. Do not pump the wand into the tube to get more mascara on the brush – this pushes air into the tube and dries out your product. Instead swirl the brush inside the tube.
- Using a piece of tissue, blot the brush gently. This removes excess mascara, preventing clumps, and enables you to build layers of mascara for a more flattering, dramatic effect.
- Start applying mascara by placing the brush at the very base of the lashes. Rub the wand back and forth as you move it along the lashes – this gives you a thicker-looking lashline. When you get halfway out, stroke the wand straight along the lashes to lengthen them.
- Comb through your lashes and allow them to dry for 30 seconds before adding a second layer.
- If you happen to get mascara on your skin, don't worry. Simply let it dry and it will just flake off. If you try to wipe it away when it is still wet, you'll only make a bigger mess! If you like, any smudges that get along your lashline can work to your advantage. Just smudge it in and you've got eyeliner!
- Remember, a few thin coats of mascara look much more natural than one heavy coat, so use restraint!
- Unless you've got very fair eyelashes, you don't need to apply mascara to your lower lashes. It's a dramatic look, so save it for evening! If you've got fair lashes, however, you may want to use the same mascara that you used on your top lashes on your bottom ones.
